Best Functional Drinks in India 2026, and What They Really Cost

Electrolyte drinks, ORS, protein shakes and energy drinks all promise to do one job. The price on the bottle hides how much of that job you're paying for. We compared India's popular functional drinks on cost per litre of hydration, per 10 g of protein and per 100 mg of caffeine, using independent lab results where they exist. The cheapest option in each category is usually the one with the least marketing.

Electral ORS, Fast&Up Reload, Wellbeing HydraSalt, Liquid I.V., Real coconut water, Yogabar and Foodstrong protein shakes on a shelf

Seven of our eight picks. Pack images from retailer listings.

The short answer

The best-value functional drink in India is plain WHO-formula ORS: an Electral sachet costs about ₹20 and makes a litre, six to eleven times cheaper than electrolyte bottles, imported mixes or packaged coconut water. For workouts, Fast&Up Reload tablets cost ₹10–20 a glass and rated A+ in an independent lab test; Wellbeing HydraSalt is the zero-sugar pick. Ready-to-drink protein shakes cost ₹32–80 per 10 g of protein and tested 7–10% under their labels, so whey powder is better value. And for caffeine, a cup of instant coffee (about ₹13 per 100 mg) beats every energy drink, including the cheapest, Sting (₹28).

ORS vs "electrolyte drink": India's 2025 rule change.

Oral rehydration salts are a medicine with a precise recipe. The WHO formula, used since the early 2000s, has 75 mmol of sodium and 75 mmol of glucose per litre, with potassium, chloride and citrate, for a total osmolarity of 245 mOsm/L. That balance is what pulls water into the body during diarrhoea. [9] Many sweetened "electrolyte drinks" sold in pharmacies looked like ORS but contained more sugar and less salt.

In October 2025, FSSAI barred food and drink products from using the term "ORS" in their names, prefixes or trademarks unless they match the WHO formula, and later told states to remove non-compliant products from shelves. [10] Kenvue retired its ORSL brand, now sold as ERZL (it had rated B+ in an independent lab test that found it didn't fully match its label [7]), and in 2026 the Indian Academy of Pediatrics backed the rule, warning that electrolyte drinks used in place of ORS can delay proper treatment of diarrhoea. [10] [11]

The practical rule

Diarrhoea, vomiting or heat exhaustion: a WHO-formula ORS, such as Electral powder or Cipla Prolyte. Look for "WHO formula" or "Oral Rehydration Salts I.P." on the pack.

Sweaty workouts or long days outdoors: an electrolyte drink or tablet is fine, ideally low in sugar. These are foods, not medicines.

Electral oral rehydration salts sachet, WHO formula, 21.8 g
01Cheapest Hydration

Electral Oral Rehydration Salts

Electral (FDC) · 21.8 g sachet makes 1 litre
₹20–21 · per litre; ₹608 for 30 sachets, ₹210 for 10
WHO formulaMedicine, not a drink mixLab: A+

The cheapest and most proven way to rehydrate. One sachet dissolved in a litre of clean water gives exactly the WHO balance of salt and glucose, for about ₹20. In Unbox Health's independent test, a sachet bought on Blinkit measured 1.85 g of sodium, in line with the WHO recipe's roughly 1.7 g per litre, and was rated A+. It tastes salty because it's meant to: that's the dose that works. [2] [9]

Watch for: mix the whole sachet in a full litre, not a glass; a stronger mix can make diarrhoea worse. It isn't meant as a daily gym drink.

Fast&Up Reload Electrolyte Tablets

Fast&Up · 20 effervescent tablets, one per 250 ml
₹10–20 · per tablet; ₹199–398 for 20 depending on flavour and offer
Low sugar5 electrolytes + vitaminsLab: A+

The easiest everyday electrolyte: drop a tablet in a bottle, and it's light, fizzy and low in sugar. Unbox Health bought a tube on Blinkit and found it matched its label (about 160 mg of sodium per tablet), rating it A+. That's a modest dose, right for a sweaty hour at the gym or a hot commute, not for treating dehydration. [3] [13]

Watch for: prices swing a lot by flavour and offer; the same 20-tablet tube ranged from ₹199 to ₹398 on the day we checked. See our Fast&Up brand profile.

A stronger electrolyte mix than Fast&Up, with no added sugar, which suits people watching sugar or drinking electrolytes on long hot days. Unbox Health's community voted to test it, the lab bought it on Amazon, and it scored 9.97/10 (A+), with about 300 mg of sodium, 250 mg of potassium and 250 mg of magnesium per serving as tested. [4] [13]

Also consider: Ace Blend Hydro Hype (₹40 a sachet) rated A+ too, but in a brand-commissioned test on a sample from the brand's own website. [1]

When you need ORS and can't measure water, such as for a sick child at night or while travelling, a sealed WHO-formula pack is worth the premium. It costs about seven times more per litre than a sachet. Unbox Health's independent test rated it B because it didn't fully match its label, though it passed contaminant checks. [6] [13]

The strongest sports electrolyte here, with about 560 mg of sodium per stick in Unbox Health's independent test (A+), and a brand built on influencer marketing. It works, but it's an imported, sugar-containing drink mix that costs four to nine times more per serving than Fast&Up and around eight times more per litre than WHO-formula ORS. [5] [13]

If you want something natural that tastes better than ORS, coconut water is a pleasant source of potassium and fluid, and Real Activ was the cheapest packaged one we found. Other packs cost more: TenderCOCO about ₹37–39 and Paper Boat about ₹46 per 200 ml. A fresh tender coconut is often cheaper still. [13]

Watch for: it's not a substitute for ORS during diarrhoea, and it's lower in sodium than a sports electrolyte.

Protein

Ready-to-drink protein shakes: convenient, not cheap.

Unbox Health independently tested five ready-to-drink protein shakes. All passed contaminant checks, but the three we could compare per bottle, Yogabar, Phab and Raw Pressery, each measured about 7–10% less protein than their labels. [8] That doesn't make them unsafe; it makes them more expensive per gram than they look.

The best-value shake that has been independently tested. Unbox Health's community voted to test it and bought it on Blinkit: it measured 9.44 g of protein per 100 g, which works out to roughly 24 g a bottle against 26 g on the label, with low sugar (2.2 g per 100 g). Bought in the monthly pack, it's one of the cheaper ready-to-drink proteins. [8] [13]

Other shakes we checked

Phab Protein Milkshake (18 g on the label, ₹77 a bottle in a 6-pack, ₹43 per 10 g): independent test found about 16 g per 200 ml and rated it C for a low nutritional profile score. Raw Pressery Dairy Protein Milkshake (18 g, ₹145 a bottle, ₹80 per 10 g): about 16 g measured, rated B, and 15 g of sugar per bottle on the label. Epigamia (A) and Maiva plant shake (B+) were also tested; we couldn't confirm current pack sizes and prices. [8] [13]

The best shakes now cost about the same per gram as a budget whey powder, but most still cost more, and powder lets you choose the dose. If you're mainly after protein, milk, curd, paneer and eggs are cheaper again; our Greek yogurt guide compares the high-protein dairy options. Caffeine

Energy drinks: ₹ per 100 mg of caffeine.

An energy drink is mostly a caffeine delivery system with sugar. Priced per 100 mg of caffeine, the range is huge, and a cup of instant coffee is cheaper than all of them. Our energy drinks guide compares them in full.

The Evidence

Do you need functional drinks at all? Usually not.

Gym under an hour

Water is enough

Your normal meals replace the salt you lose in a typical session. Sports bodies recommend drinking to avoid large fluid losses, not loading electrolytes by default. [12]

Long or very hot sessions

Add electrolytes

Sweat contains roughly 0.2–1.6 g of sodium per litre, and heavy sweaters can lose a lot in a long, hot workout. A low-sugar electrolyte or a pinch of salt with water helps. [12]

Diarrhoea or vomiting

WHO-formula ORS

Not an electrolyte drink, juice or coconut water. See a doctor for a child, an older adult, blood in the stool, or if you can't keep fluids down. [9] [11]

Protein and caffeine

Food first

Milk, curd, eggs and coffee do the same jobs for a fraction of the price. Drinks are worth it only when convenience matters.

Check with a doctor before using electrolyte drinks regularly if you have high blood pressure, heart or kidney disease, or diabetes (many contain sugar). Gym-goers on a bulk may like our homemade oat gainer shake, which costs less than any ready-to-drink protein.

Frequently asked

Frequently asked questions about functional drinks in India

What is the cheapest electrolyte drink in India?
WHO-formula ORS powder. A sachet of Electral costs about ₹20 and makes a full litre, and it rated A+ in an independent lab test. For exercise, Fast&Up Reload tablets cost about ₹10–20 per 250 ml. Ready-to-drink electrolyte bottles, imported mixes and coconut water all cost ₹130–230 per litre.
Is ORSL the same as ORS?
No. ORSL, renamed ERZL in late 2025, is an electrolyte drink, not WHO-formula oral rehydration salts. In October 2025 FSSAI barred food and drink products from using the term ORS unless they match the WHO formula. For diarrhoea or dehydration, use a WHO-formula ORS such as Electral powder or Cipla Prolyte.
Do I need electrolyte drinks for the gym?
Usually not. For workouts under about an hour, water and your normal meals replace what you lose. Electrolytes help in long or very hot sessions, or if you sweat heavily, because sweat contains roughly 0.2–1.6 g of sodium per litre and varies a lot between people. Choose a low-sugar product and don't drink more than you sweat.
Are ready-to-drink protein shakes worth the money?
Only for convenience. They cost about ₹32–80 per 10 g of protein, against roughly ₹38–41 for an unflavoured whey concentrate. In independent lab tests, three popular shakes delivered about 7–10% less protein than their labels.
Is coconut water good for hydration?
It is a pleasant, natural drink with potassium, and fine for everyday hydration. It is not a replacement for ORS during diarrhoea, and it costs ₹130–230 per litre in packs, six to eleven times more than an ORS sachet.
Which energy drink gives the cheapest caffeine?
Sting, at about ₹28 per 100 mg of caffeine. Red Bull costs about ₹150 per 100 mg. A cup of instant coffee is cheaper than any of them, at roughly ₹13 per 100 mg, without the sugar.
How much caffeine is safe in a day?
For healthy adults, up to about 400 mg a day, and up to about 200 mg in a single dose, according to the European Food Safety Authority. Pregnant and breastfeeding women should stay under 200 mg a day. Energy drinks are not recommended for children.
