Best Protein Bars in India 2026: 7 Picks Checked Against Lab Tests

A protein bar is a snack with a protein claim on the front. Whether it earns that claim depends on three things on the back: how much protein it really has, what it's sweetened with, and what it costs per gram of protein. We compared India's popular bars on all three, using independent lab tests where they exist. One bar tested at half the protein on its label.

Six of our picks: Yogabar 20g Chocolate Brownie, The Whole Truth Double Cocoa, MuscleBlaze Choco Almond, The Whole Truth Double Cocoa Pro, HYP Whey Protein Bar and Yogabar Power Up

Six of our seven picks. Pack images from brand stores and retailer listings.

The short answer

The best protein bar in India is Yogabar's 20g Protein Bar (Chocolate Brownie): 20 g of protein from whey, pea protein and almonds, sweetened with dates instead of sugar alcohols, and the only bar rated A+ in Unbox Health's independent lab tests. The Whole Truth is the cleanest label (whey, nuts, dates, nothing else of note), and MuscleBlaze's 10 g bar matched its label most exactly in the lab. If you want the most protein per rupee, HYP's 20 g whey bar costs about ₹49 per 10 g of protein. Most bars are expensive protein: an unflavoured whey concentrate costs about ₹38–41 per 10 g. Skip SuperYou's Mega Protein Wafer until it's retested; a lab found half the protein on its label.

How we chose

The four-check test: protein bar or chocolate bar?

"High protein" on the front tells you almost nothing. FSSAI allows the claim once protein supplies at least 20% of a product's energy, which plenty of sugary snacks manage. [15] We ranked bars on four checks from the back of the pack, plus independent lab results where they exist.

15–20 gProtein per bar from whey, milk, soy or egg, the complete sources. Collagen or gelatin padding doesn't count.
SweetenerDates or a little sugar, or a sugar alcohol such as maltitol (INS 965)? Each has trade-offs, covered below.

01Best Overall

Yogabar 20g Protein Bar (Chocolate Brownie)

Yogabar · 70 g bar
₹63 · per 10 g protein; ₹125 a bar
20 g proteinWhey + pea + almondsDates, no sugar alcohols10 g fibre

The best all-round protein bar in India because it gets the basics right and the lab confirmed it. The protein comes from a whey concentrate, whey isolate and pea protein blend plus almonds, so a single bar gets close to the 20–25 g that best switches on muscle repair. It's sweetened with dates and contains no maltitol, sucralose or other sugar alcohols. In Unbox Health's test it measured 29.7 g of protein per 100 g against 29.6 g on the label, and it was the only bar rated A+. [6] [11]

Lab result (Unbox Health, batch P05A24A, April 2024): A+, 9.51/10. Protein 29.68 g vs 29.57 g claimed per 100 g; sugar 20.68 g vs 21.57 g; label accuracy 10/10; no aflatoxin, lead or arsenic of concern. The rating has since lapsed. [6]

Ingredients: almonds 32%, protein blend (whey concentrate, whey isolate, pea concentrate) 25%, dates 17%, prebiotic fibre (FOS) 13%, cocoa 7%, flax seeds, probiotic. Watch for: about 14.5 g of sugar per bar, all from dates and milk. Yogabar's newer "Power Up" bar is a different recipe (see #6).

The Whole Truth Protein Bar Double Cocoa 52 g wrapper, 13 g protein, sweetened with dates
02Cleanest Ingredients

The Whole Truth Protein Bar (Double Cocoa)

The Whole Truth · 52 g bar
₹73–83 · per 10 g protein; ₹97 a bar on Amazon (6-pack), ₹111 on the brand store (10-pack)
13.3 g proteinWhey + nutsDates only256 kcal

The shortest, most readable ingredient list in the category: cocoa, cocoa butter, dates, cashews, almonds and whey, as the wrapper says. There are no sugar alcohols, no artificial sweeteners and no added fats. It's a smaller bar, so 13 g of protein, which makes it a good snack rather than a post-workout protein hit. The lab confirmed the protein (26.3 g per 100 g against 25.6 g claimed). [5] [12]

Lab result (Unbox Health, December 2025): A, 9.06/10. Protein 26.27 g vs 25.57 g claimed per 100 g; sugar 18.69 g vs 20 g; no aflatoxin. This test was commissioned by the brand, though the batch was bought from Amazon. An earlier, independently initiated 2024 test of the Coffee Cocoa bar also rated A. [1] [5]

Watch for: about 10 g of sugar per bar from dates. The Whole Truth calls this "all the sugar is from raw whole dates", which is accurate, but it's still sugar.

MuscleBlaze Protein Bar (Choco Almond, 10 g)

MuscleBlaze · pack of 6
₹67 · per 10 g protein; ₹399 for 6 bars
10 g proteinSoy + wheyMaltitolLowest sugar

The bar whose label you can trust most: Unbox Health's lab found 26.8 g of protein per 100 g against 26.7 g claimed, and gave it a perfect 10/10 for label accuracy. It's also the lowest in sugar of the bars that use real chocolate-style coatings, at 6.3 g per 100 g. The trade-offs are a smaller 10 g of protein, mostly from soy (soy nuggets and soy isolate, plus whey), and a coating made with maltitol and hydrogenated vegetable fat. [7] [13]

Lab result (Unbox Health, batch PPBCA0099, April 2024): B+, 8.91/10. Protein 26.8 g vs 26.67 g; sugar 6.32 g vs 5.48 g per 100 g; label accuracy 10/10; no aflatoxin. [7]

Watch for: sodium is relatively high for a bar (323 mg per 100 g in the lab test). See our MuscleBlaze brand profile.

The Whole Truth · 67 g bar
₹75–79 · per 10 g protein; ₹764 for 5 on Amazon, ₹806 on the brand store
20.3 g proteinWhey concentrate + isolateDates only337 kcal

The Whole Truth's gym bar: the same date-sweetened, no-sugar-alcohol recipe with more whey, so 20.3 g of protein from whey concentrate and isolate. That's the most protein of any bar here without maltitol. It's also the most expensive bar on the list and the most calorie-dense at 337 kcal, so it suits a meal replacement or post-training snack more than a casual one. This exact bar hasn't been lab-tested; the brand's smaller bars tested well. [1] [12]

Watch for: contains traces of lactose (whey concentrate), so check with a doctor if you're lactose intolerant.

20 g proteinWhey + milk protein isolateMaltitol

The cheapest way to get 20 g of dairy protein in a bar: whey concentrate and milk protein isolate, at about ₹98 a bar. The catch is the sweetener and fat. It's sweetened with maltitol and made with palm oil and wheat flour, and the "sugar free" claim didn't fully hold up when HYP's Chocolate Espresso bar was lab-tested: Unbox Health measured 10.3 g of sugar per 100 g against 0 g on the label, though the protein matched. [4] [13]

Lab result for HYP Chocolate Espresso (Unbox Health, April 2024): A, 9.01/10. Protein 25.22 g vs 25 g claimed; sugar 10.29 g vs 0 g claimed per 100 g; no contaminants of concern. The Cookies & Cream bar we list hasn't been tested. [4]

The lowest price per gram of protein of any bar we found, often under ₹55 a bar in 5-packs. Read the label before assuming it's a whey bar, though. The marketing leads with whey, but the protein blend is mostly peanut protein, soy and milk, with whey protein concentrate at only 3.5% of the bar. The label also shows 15.8 g of total sugar and 11.1 g of polyols (maltitol) per bar despite "0 added sugar", plus hydrogenated fat in the coating. Not lab-tested. [11]

Label per 70 g bar: 252 kcal, 20 g protein, 34 g carbohydrate, 15.8 g total sugar (0 g added), 11.1 g polyols, 7.3 g saturated fat. The pack warns that polyols may have a laxative effect.

The only bar where the lab found literally no sugar, matching the label, with protein slightly above the claim (26.0 g per 100 g against 25 g). The protein is all whey. It earns its place for people counting sugar, but it's a wafer, not a whole-food bar: refined wheat flour, hydrogenated vegetable oil and maltitol, with 17.3 g of saturated fat per 100 g in the lab test. [8] [13]

Why these didn't make the list

  • SuperYou Mega Protein Wafer (Nutty Chocolate): sold as a 20 g protein bar. Unbox Health bought a batch from Amazon in August 2026 and measured 16.35 g of protein per 100 g against 33.33 g on the label, about half. It was rated C. The protein is a yeast and soy blend, sweetened with maltitol. [2] [13]
  • RiteBite Max Protein Daily (Choco Almond): protein matched (20.5 g vs 20 g per 100 g), but the lab measured 15.74 g of sugar per 100 g against 1 g on the label. Only 10 g protein per bar, and the coating uses maltitol and palm kernel oil. [3] [13]
  • "Protein" cookies, brownies and mini bars with 4–7 g of protein: snacks with a claim, not protein bars.
  • Bars that pad protein with collagen or gelatin: incomplete protein for muscle, and not vegetarian. Check the ingredient list for "collagen", "hydrolysed collagen" or "gelatin".

Each lab result is one batch, mostly bought in 2024. Brands can change recipes and suppliers; we'll update this page as newer independent results are published. Older results are on the changelog.

Independent tests

Label vs lab: what the tests found.

Unbox Health buys protein bars off the shelf, mostly from Amazon, and tests them at NABL-accredited labs for protein, sugar, fat and contaminants. It has published results for eight bars sold in India. [1] Protein claims mostly held up, with one big exception. Sugar claims were less reliable: two bars sold as zero or near-zero sugar measured 10–16 g per 100 g.

Source: Unbox Health lab reports from NABL-accredited labs; one batch per product, tested April 2024 (most), December 2025 (The Whole Truth Double Cocoa, brand-commissioned) and August 2026 (Avvatar, SuperYou). Protein scale 0–40 g, sugar scale 0–25 g. All eight passed contaminant checks. [1]–[8]

Why would a "zero sugar" bar test at 10–16 g of sugar? We don't know, and Unbox Health doesn't say. It could be a formulation or batch difference, or sugars from milk solids, nuts or chocolate that weren't fully counted on the label. Either way, the label understated what's in the bar, which matters most if you're managing blood sugar.

Value

Protein bar price in India: ₹ per 10 g of protein.

Per bar, a 10 g bar looks cheaper than a 20 g one. Per gram of protein, it often isn't. All but one bar here cost more for their protein than an unflavoured whey concentrate, which works out to about ₹38–41 per 10 g; see our whey protein comparison.

Read the label

Dates vs maltitol: the two kinds of protein bar.

Almost every bar in India falls into one of two camps, and the sugar number on the front tells you which.

Date-sweetened

Yogabar 20g Brownie, The Whole Truth

Short ingredient lists built on nuts, dates and whey. No sugar alcohols. The trade-off is 18–23 g of sugar per 100 g, about 10–15 g per bar, all from dates and milk. Better for your gut, worse for your sugar count.

Maltitol-sweetened

MuscleBlaze, HYP, Avvatar, RiteBite, SuperYou, Power Up

"No added sugar" or "sugar free" fronts, made possible by maltitol (INS 965), often in a coating made with hydrogenated fat or palm oil. Lower sugar on the label, but two of these tested far higher than claimed.

About maltitol

Not free, not gentle

Maltitol has roughly half the calories of sugar and still raises blood glucose, though less than sugar. In larger amounts it ferments in the gut and can cause bloating, gas and loose stools; many packs carry a laxative warning. [14]

"Net carbs"

Ignore it

"Net carbs" subtracts fibre and polyols from total carbohydrate. FSSAI doesn't define it. Read total carbohydrate and total sugar instead.

The Evidence

Do protein bars build muscle? Only the 20 g ones help much.

Muscle repair after training is switched on most strongly when a meal supplies about 2.5 g of the amino acid leucine, which you get from roughly 20–25 g of high-quality protein such as whey or milk. [9] [10] A 20 g whey bar gets you close in one go; a 10 g bar gets you halfway. What matters most is your total protein across the day: for most lifters about 1.6 g per kg of body weight.

Protein source matters as much as the gram count. Whey, milk, soy and egg are complete proteins. Collagen and gelatin aren't (collagen has no tryptophan and little leucine), so a bar that pads its protein with them delivers less muscle-useful protein than the label suggests, and isn't vegetarian. A bar built mostly on peanut or a single plant protein is also less effective per gram than one built on whey or a soy and pea blend.

For satiety and weight loss, higher-protein meals do help people feel fuller and eat less. [16] But most protein bars carry 200–340 kcal, so a bar eaten on top of your usual meals adds calories. Use one to replace a less filling snack, not as an extra.

If you're training, the cheaper route is food first: our oat gainer shake, high-protein Greek yogurt and natural peanut butter all cost less per gram of protein than any bar. The Lean Mass Builder protocol plans the whole day.

Frequently asked

Frequently asked questions about protein bars in India

Which is the best protein bar in India?
Yogabar's 20g Protein Bar (Chocolate Brownie) is our top pick. It gives 20 g of protein from whey, pea protein and almonds, uses dates instead of sugar alcohols, and was the only bar rated A+ in Unbox Health's independent lab tests, with protein matching the label. The Whole Truth is the cleanest-label alternative, and MuscleBlaze had the most accurate label in testing.
Which protein bar has the most protein?
Among the bars we compared, The Whole Truth Double Cocoa Pro has 20.3 g per bar, and Yogabar 20g, HYP Whey Protein Bar and Yogabar Power Up each claim 20 g. Check the protein source too: Yogabar Power Up's protein is mostly peanut and soy, with whey only 3.5% of the bar. One bar to avoid: SuperYou's Mega Protein Wafer claims 33.3 g protein per 100 g, but a lab measured 16.4 g.
Are protein bars healthy?
Some are, many are closer to chocolate bars. A useful bar has 15–20 g of protein from whey, milk, soy or egg, a short ingredient list and modest sugar. Many Indian bars have 10 g of protein or less and use maltitol, hydrogenated fat or palm oil. Treat a bar as a convenient snack, not a replacement for meals.
Do protein bars help build muscle?
Only as part of your daily protein. Muscle protein synthesis is switched on most strongly by about 20–25 g of high-quality protein in one sitting, which supplies roughly 2.5 g of leucine. A 20 g whey bar gets close; a 10 g bar does not. Total daily protein matters most.
Why does a no-added-sugar protein bar still contain sugar?
Because sugar comes from other ingredients. Date-sweetened bars like Yogabar Chocolate Brownie and The Whole Truth contain 18–23 g of sugar per 100 g from dates and milk. Some maltitol-sweetened bars also tested higher than their labels: RiteBite Max Protein Daily claimed 1 g of sugar per 100 g and a lab measured 15.7 g.
Is maltitol in protein bars bad for you?
It is safe but often oversold. Maltitol has about half the calories of sugar but still raises blood glucose, and in larger amounts it can cause bloating, gas and loose stools. A bar with 10 g or more of maltitol can do this in sensitive people. It is listed as maltitol or INS 965.
Is a protein bar or whey protein better value?
Whey, in most cases. Protein bars in this comparison cost about ₹27–83 for 10 g of protein, while an unflavoured whey concentrate costs about ₹38–41 for 10 g with less sugar and fat. Only the cheapest bar, Yogabar Power Up, costs less, and its protein is mostly peanut and soy. Bars buy convenience and portability, not cheap protein.
Are protein bars good for weight loss?
A high-protein bar can replace a less filling snack, because protein helps with fullness. But most bars have 200–340 kcal, so eating one on top of your usual meals adds calories rather than helping weight loss.
