Editorial red flags

What our scores automatically penalise

FLAG

ALA-only "omega-3"

Flaxseed and chia products sold as omega-3. ALA converts to EPA at only 5–10% efficiency and to DHA at <1%. Not interchangeable with fish oil for cardiovascular or cognitive endpoints. Every such product is penalised on label honesty.

FLAG

Generic vs. patented extracts

KSM-66 and Sensoril have extract-specific RCT data. Generic ashwagandha powder, regardless of withanolide % claimed, has no extract-specific trial base. The evidence attaches to the specific extract, not the plant. Same logic: Creapure vs. generic creatine, BCM-95 vs. plain curcumin.

FLAG

Cyanocobalamin B12

Cyanocobalamin requires hepatic conversion to the active methylcobalamin form. For India's ~47% B12-deficient urban adults (NFHS-5), particularly vegetarians, the active form matters. Products using cyanocobalamin are rated down on ingredient form.

FLAG

Vitamin D2 instead of D3

Ergocalciferol raises serum 25(OH)D roughly half as effectively as cholecalciferol, with a shorter half-life. ICMR and NICE both recommend D3. Any product using D2 at any dose is rated down on ingredient form — no exceptions.

FLAG

Proprietary blends

When multiple actives hide behind a single combined weight, underdosing is undetectable. We cannot score dose accuracy for any ingredient inside a proprietary blend. No product with a meaningful prop blend scores above 6.5 on dose accuracy.

FLAG

"1000mg fish oil" is not 1000mg omega-3

A standard 1000mg capsule contains approximately 180mg EPA + 120mg DHA = 300mg combined omega-3. The cardiovascular benefit threshold is 1g EPA+DHA daily — requiring 3–4 such capsules. Products that don't disclose EPA+DHA separately are penalised on label honesty.

Scoring methodology

Five dimensions. Public weights. No product scores above 9 without third-party purity data.

01
Dose accuracy
Is the clinical dose present? Does it match the best RCTs for the specific extract?
02
Ingredient form
D3 vs D2, methylcobalamin vs cyanocobalamin, magnesium glycinate vs oxide.
03
Purity documentation
Is a NABL, IFOS, or NSF COA published? Is it batch-level or brand-level?
04
India-market value
Rupees per clinically effective dose — dose-adjusted, not sticker price.
05
Label honesty
Do claims match evidence? Proprietary blends, ALA fraud, and disease claims all penalised.
Composite score = weighted average across all five dimensions. Evidence quality modifies weights — a product in a low-evidence category cannot escape the evidence penalty through good dosing alone. Full methodology →
