Look for CFU "guaranteed through end of shelf life"; that is the only count that reflects what you actually swallow.
Do probiotics need refrigeration in India?
Many do, and it is a real problem here. Live Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium products are temperature-sensitive, and India's warm climate plus an unreliable retail cold chain means a lot of product loses viability before it reaches you. Fenster et al., 2019, Microorganisms If something needs refrigeration but sat on a warm pharmacy shelf, assume the live count is well below label.

The way around this is format. Spore-forming Bacillus coagulans and Bacillus clausii, and the yeast Saccharomyces boulardii, are far more heat-stable and survive both storage and stomach acid much better than delicate live cultures. For Indian conditions, choosing a spore or yeast-based product removes the cold-chain gamble almost entirely — which is a big reason they rank well in this guide.
Is curd or dahi as good as a probiotic supplement?
For everyday gut health, home-set dahi is genuinely good — it is live, cheap, and part of a fermented-food-rich diet that supports the microbiome. What it is not is a defined probiotic: the strains in curd are undefined and vary from batch to batch and household to household, so you cannot tie it to a specific clinical outcome.

So the honest answer depends on the goal. For general wellbeing, dahi and other fermented foods (idli, dosa batter, pickles) are excellent and you do not need a supplement at all. For a specific medical job — preventing diarrhoea during an antibiotic course, trialling relief for IBS — you want a named, evidence-backed strain at a known dose, which curd cannot provide. They are complements, not competitors.
Should I take probiotics with antibiotics?
This is one of the few probiotic uses with solid backing. Starting Saccharomyces boulardii or Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG alongside an antibiotic course reduces the risk of antibiotic-associated diarrhoea. Goldenberg et al., 2017, Cochrane Szajewska & Kołodziej, 2015 Given how freely antibiotics are used in India, this is a genuinely useful, low-cost habit.

Two practical points. First, S. boulardii is a yeast, so the antibiotic does not kill it — an advantage that makes it a particularly good pairing. Second, if you use a bacterial probiotic, separate it from the antibiotic dose by about two hours so the drug does not wipe it out. Begin the probiotic when you start the antibiotic, and continue for a week or two after finishing. Are probiotics safe, and can anyone take them?
For healthy people, the well-studied strains have a strong safety record. The usual side effect is mild gas or bloating in the first few days as your gut adjusts, which typically settles. Sanders et al., 2019, Nat Rev Gastroenterol Hepatol

The important exception is people who are seriously ill or immunocompromised — those in intensive care, with central venous catheters, after major surgery, or with severe immune suppression. In these groups, swallowing large numbers of live organisms carries a real, if uncommon, risk of infection, and probiotics should only be used under medical supervision. If you have a significant medical condition or are caring for someone who does, check with a doctor before starting rather than treating a probiotic as automatically harmless.
