How do I create an ABHA number?

The short answer

Go to abha.abdm.gov.in and choose Aadhaar or Driving Licence. It's free and takes a few minutes.2

  • With Aadhaar: agree to the consent, enter the OTP sent to your Aadhaar-linked mobile, confirm your contact details and pick an ABHA address. Your 14-digit ABHA number is created online.
  • With a driving licence: the portal gives you only an enrolment number. You then take your licence to a nearby ABDM participating facility, where staff verify it and issue your ABHA number.2
⚠️
Only on official sites

ABHA is free. Type your Aadhaar number or an OTP only on abha.abdm.gov.in, the ABHA app or the Aarogya Setu app. Many lookalike “ABHA card” websites exist. Naked Compound is not connected to the National Health Authority, and we never ask for your Aadhaar, OTP or health records.

What are the ABHA number and the ABHA address?

Your ABHA number is a randomly generated 14-digit number that identifies you across hospitals, labs and clinics that use India's digital health system. Your ABHA address is an easy-to-remember username, like name@abdm, that you use to log in to health record apps and share your records.1

You need the ABHA number first. The ABHA address can be created during sign-up or later in an app such as the ABHA app or Aarogya Setu, and you can have more than one address.3

Getting an ABHA number is voluntary. It is also not the same as the Ayushman Bharat PM-JAY card: having ABHA does not enrol you in PM-JAY or make you eligible for it.1

What you need before you start

  • For the Aadhaar route: your Aadhaar number and the mobile number linked to it. The OTP goes to that number.3
  • For the driving licence route: your licence number, and your name, date of birth and gender exactly as printed on it, plus a mobile number.3

No mobile linked to your Aadhaar? You can link one at a Permanent Aadhaar Centre, or visit an ABDM participating facility and verify with your fingerprint (biometric Aadhaar authentication). You get your ABHA number at the facility.3

Making one for parents or children? One mobile number can be used to create ABHA numbers for up to six family members.3

How to create an ABHA number with Aadhaar

The portal walks you through four steps.2

  1. Open the official page. Go to abha.abdm.gov.in/abha/v3/register and choose “Create your ABHA number using Aadhaar”.
  2. Consent collection. Enter your Aadhaar number, read the declaration and tick “I agree”. It says your Aadhaar is shared with the National Health Authority only to create the ABHA number, and that you can revoke this consent.
  3. Aadhaar authentication. Enter the OTP sent to your Aadhaar-linked mobile.
  4. Communication details. Confirm the mobile number (and email, if you like) you want ABHA messages sent to.
  5. ABHA address creation. Pick your username, such as yourname@abdm.

Your ABHA number appears at the end, with an option to download the card. Our guide to downloading your ABHA card covers getting it again later.

How to create an ABHA number with a driving licence

  1. On the same page, choose “Create your ABHA number using Driving Licence”.
  2. Mobile authentication: enter your mobile number and the OTP.
  3. Profile and consent: fill in your licence details and personal details.
  4. Process completion: you receive an enrolment number, not an ABHA number.
  5. Carry your driving licence to the nearest ABDM participating facility. Staff verify your identity and you get your ABHA number.2

Lost the enrolment number? The ABHA login page has a “Retrieve your Enrolment number” link.2

ℹ️
Some websites get this wrong

Several popular guides say the driving licence route finishes online. NHA's own portal says it doesn't: you get an enrolment number online, and the ABHA number only after an in-person check.

Can I create ABHA in an app instead?

Yes. The ABHA app and Aarogya Setu 2.0, the government's revamped health record app, can both create an ABHA profile with Aadhaar. In Aarogya Setu 2.0, signing up creates your ABHA number and ABHA address together.4 Download them only from the Google Play Store or Apple App Store, published by the National Health Authority.

Once you have ABHA, the next step is getting your records into it. See how to upload medical records to ABHA.

Creating ABHA: FAQ

Is the ABHA number free?

Yes. Creating an ABHA number, an ABHA address and downloading the card are all free. Any website or agent asking you to pay for an ABHA card is not official.

Is ABHA mandatory?

No. NHA says getting an ABHA number is voluntary. You can still be treated at hospitals without one.

Is the ABHA card the same as the Ayushman card?

No. ABHA is a health ID for linking your records. The Ayushman card belongs to the PM-JAY insurance scheme. Having an ABHA number does not enrol you in PM-JAY.

Can I create ABHA without Aadhaar?

Yes, with a driving licence. The portal gives you an enrolment number, and you get the ABHA number after a staff member at an ABDM participating facility checks your licence.

My mobile is not linked to Aadhaar. What can I do?

Link it at a Permanent Aadhaar Centre, or go to an ABDM participating facility and verify with your fingerprint. The facility can create your ABHA number there.

How many family members can use one mobile number?

NHA says one mobile number can be used to create ABHA numbers for up to six family members.

Who can I call for help?

The ABDM helpline is 1800-11-4477 (also listed as 14477). You can also raise a complaint on the ABDM grievance portal.
