The short answer
Yes, in substance. Pintola High Protein Dark Chocolate Oats don't contain the big soya chunks you'd put in a curry. But the first ingredient in their protein blend is texturized soy protein, which is exactly what soya chunks are made of, just in smaller pieces. The blend also contains soy protein isolate and a smaller amount of whey. [1]
That's not a secret; it's printed on the pack. But the front of the pack leads with "26g protein", nuts and chocolate, so many buyers assume the protein comes from whey, as in a gym shake. Most of it doesn't.
What the label says
Here is the ingredient list for the Dark Chocolate variant as currently listed by Pintola and on Amazon.in. [1][2] Ingredients on Indian food labels are listed in descending order of weight, so the first item in a group is the largest.
Two things stand out. First, the protein blend is more than a quarter of the product, a large addition on top of the oats. Second, within that blend, soy comes first and whey comes last. Pintola doesn't disclose the exact split, but the order tells you soy protein is the bigger share. When we reviewed this product in June, we noted the same soy-led blend. [5]
Recipes change, and the percentages above are slightly different from the pack we reviewed earlier in the year. Always check the pack in your hand.
What "texturized soy protein" actually is
Texturized soy protein (also called textured vegetable protein, or TVP) is made by taking defatted soy flour or soy protein concentrate, left over after soybean oil is extracted, and pushing it through an extruder under heat and pressure. The dough comes out spongy and is cut into shapes and dried: large chunks, small granules or flakes. [3]
The soya chunks sold in every Indian kirana store are one shape of this product. The texturized soy protein in protein oats is the same material, usually as small crisps or granules so it blends into the oats. So when people ask "does Pintola oats have soya chunks?", the honest answer is that it has the same ingredient, just not in chunk form.
Soya chunks (kirana store)
Texturized soy protein in large pieces. Needs soaking and cooking. Sold as a cheap, plain protein ingredient.
Pintola High Protein Oats
Texturized soy protein in small pieces, plus soy isolate and whey, mixed with oats, nuts, jaggery and cocoa. Ready in minutes.
Does it matter?
For most people, not much. There are a few specific cases where it does.
Soy is a decent protein. It's a complete plant protein, and soy isolate is one of the better plant proteins for muscle. It has a little less leucine than whey, which matters slightly for muscle-building per gram, but in a breakfast bowl the difference is small. Our guide to plant vs animal protein covers this in more detail.
Soy doesn't lower testosterone. This is the worry we hear most. A 2021 meta-analysis of 38 clinical studies found soy and soy isoflavones had no effect on testosterone or estrogen levels in men. [4]
It matters if you're allergic. Soy and milk are both common allergens, and this product contains both, plus tree nuts. If you're avoiding soy for any reason, this isn't the oats for you.
It isn't vegan. The whey makes it vegetarian but not vegan.
It matters for value. If you mainly want more protein at breakfast, soy is one of the cheapest protein sources there is. You could add a spoonful of soya granules or a scoop of protein to plain oats yourself for less money. What you pay extra for with Pintola is convenience, flavour, and the nuts and seeds.
What about Magic Masala?
We couldn't confirm the Magic Masala variant's recipe. The online listing we found shows rolled oats, spices and vegetables, with hydrolysed vegetable protein from soya (a flavouring), and no protein blend. [2] That doesn't add up with a "26g protein" claim, so either the listing is out of date or the protein comes from somewhere it doesn't name. If soy matters to you, read the ingredient list on the pack before buying.
Our take
Pintola isn't hiding anything: the soy is on the label. But "26g high protein oats" with chocolate and almonds on the front leads a lot of people to assume a whey-based product, and it mostly isn't. Most of the protein comes from texturized soy, the same material as soya chunks. That's a perfectly reasonable protein source. Just know what you're buying and what you're paying for. Our full Pintola High Protein Oats review scores it 5.8/10, and also covers the "no refined sugar" claim (it's sweetened with jaggery, which is still sugar).
