Eve Lom Cleanser review: you're paying for the ritual.
The balm that started the balm-cleanser trend, still sold with its muslin cloth and hot-water ritual. It removes makeup beautifully and feels indulgent. The formula underneath is mineral oil, lanolin and essential oils, which is fine, but it's not what the price suggests.
Eve Lom Cleanser is an effective, luxurious balm cleanser, but most of its price pays for the brand and the ritual, not the formula. Its base is mineral oil, lanolin derivatives and cocoa butter, which dissolve makeup and sunscreen well and suit normal to dry skin. It's scented with clove, eucalyptus, hops and chamomile oils and lists eugenol and limonene, fragrance ingredients known to cause allergies in some people. The hot muslin-cloth method gives a gentle buff but can irritate if you scrub. In India the 100 ml jar costs about ₹6,650–10,500, roughly ₹66–105 per ml.

Eve Lom's Cleanser has been a cult product for decades, and it's often credited with making balm cleansers a luxury category. It comes with a cotton muslin cloth, and the method is part of the appeal: massage the balm onto dry skin, then press and wipe it away with a cloth soaked in hot water.

"5-in-1"
Listings describe it as a 5-in-1 cleanser that removes makeup, deep-cleanses, exfoliates, hydrates and balances. It removes makeup and cleans well; the "exfoliation" comes from the muslin cloth, and the rest are effects any rich balm has.
Removes waterproof makeup
A mineral-oil balm is genuinely good at dissolving waterproof mascara and water-resistant sunscreen, and it's gentle on the skin while doing it.
The essential oils
The clove, eucalyptus and hops scent is part of the experience, and a real risk if your skin is fragrance-sensitive. Eugenol, from clove, is a known skin allergen.
Luxury pricing
At roughly ₹66–105 per ml, you're paying for the brand, the ritual and the packaging. Mineral-oil balms with similar cleansing performance cost a fraction of this.
What we can actually say.
Mineral oil is an effective, gentle cleanser. Oil-based cleansers dissolve oily makeup and water-resistant sunscreen that water-based face washes struggle with. Cosmetic-grade mineral oil is highly refined, inexpensive and generally well tolerated, and it's the ingredient doing most of the cleaning here.
The fragrance ingredients are the main risk. The EU requires eugenol and limonene to be named on labels because they can cause allergic reactions in some people. [3] If you have fragrance-sensitive skin or a known clove allergy, this isn't the balm for you.
The muslin cloth is a gentle physical exfoliant, so go easy. The American Academy of Dermatology advises being gentle with exfoliation and cautions that darker skin can develop dark spots after irritation. [4] Press and wipe with the warm cloth rather than scrubbing, and keep the water warm, not hot.
No independent product trials. We found no independent published studies of Eve Lom Cleanser. Its reputation rests on decades of customer loyalty, which tells you people enjoy it, not that it outperforms cheaper balms.
The ritual, done gently.
Warm and massage onto dry skin
Warm a small amount between your fingers and massage it onto a dry face in circular motions, including over makeup. [2]
Warm cloth, press and wipe
Soak the muslin cloth in warm (never hot) water, wring it out, press it over your face for a few seconds, then gently wipe the balm away. Repeat. The brand suggests finishing with a cool compress. [2]
Scrub with the cloth
Wipe, don't rub. Hard buffing and very hot water can irritate skin and, on darker skin, leave marks. [4]
Wash the muslin cloth
Use a fresh or freshly washed cloth each time and let it dry fully; a damp cloth can harbour bacteria. Follow with your usual moisturiser.
