Nothing in a bottle burns fat. The deficit does that. Every supplement in a cut has exactly one job: protect the muscle and the training so the weight you lose is fat, not tissue.

This is the protocol lifters get backwards more than any other. The shelf is full of "fat burners," "cutting stacks," and "lean pills," and none of them meaningfully move fat off your body — a caloric deficit built from food and training does all of the work. What supplements can do during a cut is hold the line: keep protein high enough to spare muscle, keep training output intact, and stop the electrolyte-and-glycogen "crash" that makes people quit in week two.

So the whole logic inverts. You add, you don't subtract. Four things earn their place in a deficit — higher-dose protein, retained creatine, measured caffeine, and electrolytes. Three popular categories get cut from the cut, and we name each one and why. The headline cost, ₹1,690/month, is lower than the muscle-building stacks precisely because the honest answer to "what supplement should I buy to lose fat?" is "fewer of them."

Before you start — what "crashing" actually means

A cut fails in one of three ways, and none of them is "not enough fat burner." The first failure is the muscle crash — you lose weight, but a chunk of it is the muscle you spent a year building, so you end up smaller and softer instead of leaner. The second is the energy crash — training output collapses, you feel flat and weak, and the deficit becomes miserable. The third is the adherence crash — the misery of the first two makes you quit. This protocol is built entirely around preventing those three, in that order.

The dominant variable is the size of the deficit, not any supplement. A sensible cut for a lifter who wants to keep muscle is a deficit of roughly 20–25% below maintenance, producing about 0.5–0.75% of bodyweight lost per week. For an 80kg lifter that is roughly 0.4–0.6kg/week. Go faster — the crash-diet approach of 1,200 kcal and two hours of cardio — and the body preferentially burns muscle and slows metabolism. No supplement rescues an over-aggressive deficit. Fix the deficit first.

The instinct to cut protein powder is the single most expensive mistake

When lifters decide to "eat cleaner and cut calories," the protein tub is often the first thing to go — it feels like a shortcut, a processed powder, an easy 120 calories to skip. It is exactly the wrong cut. Protein requirement rises in a deficit because your body is under-fuelled and looking for tissue to break down; protein is what tells it to break down fat instead of muscle. Cutting the whey to save calories during a cut is like removing the seatbelt to make the car lighter.

The protein math — the number that goes up, not down

In a muscle-building surplus, protein is the foundation. In a deficit, it becomes the whole ballgame. The research is unusually consistent: higher protein during weight loss preserves lean mass, and the effect is large. Mettler et al. (2010) compared 2.3 vs 1.0g/kg in athletes on a diet and found the high-protein group lost far less lean mass.1 Longland et al. (2016) went further — lifters in a steep 40% deficit on 2.4g/kg gained 1.2kg of lean mass while losing 4.8kg of fat, versus near-zero muscle gain at 1.2g/kg.2 Helms et al. (2014) reviewed the field and recommended 2.3–3.1g/kg of lean body mass for lean lifters cutting.3

For an 80kg lifter at around 15% body fat — roughly 68kg of lean mass — that maps to a target of about 180g of protein per day, on the higher side of the surplus target, not the lower. The map below shows where it comes from on a cutting day, when high-satiety protein foods do most of the work and supplements fill a smaller, precise gap.

Why protein does double duty on a cut

Beyond sparing muscle, protein has the highest thermic effect of the three macronutrients — roughly 20–30% of its calories are burned just digesting it, versus 5–10% for carbs and 0–3% for fat. It is also the most satiating macronutrient per calorie, which directly attacks the adherence crash. A high-protein diet during a deficit is doing three jobs at once: preserving muscle, raising the "free" calorie burn, and keeping you full enough to stay in the deficit.

The one supplement that matters more in a cut than in a bulk. In a surplus, one scoop tops up an already-high food intake; in a deficit, whey does two jobs food struggles to — it hits the elevated protein target cheaply, and a shake is a high-satiety, low-calorie tool for the hungry mid-morning and evening windows where a cut is most likely to break down. This is the compound you spend the most on.

Why the dose goes up, not down

As the protein map showed, the target on a cut sits at the top of the range — around 2.2–2.6g/kg of bodyweight for a lean lifter. Whole food does the bulk of it, but reaching 180g from food alone means a lot of chewing and a lot of calories from the fattier protein sources (paneer, whole eggs, thigh meat). Two to three whey servings let you hit the number with lean, precise, low-calorie protein — 25g of protein for roughly 110 calories per scoop, with almost no fat or sugar in a concentrate or isolate. On a cut, that calorie efficiency is the entire point.

Consider isolate if lactose bothers you or if you want to shave the last few calories — WPI is ~90% protein with minimal lactose and fat, versus ~80% for concentrate. The difference is marginal for most people; concentrate is fine and cheaper. Spend the saved money on hitting your total, not on chasing the "cutting-optimised" isolate marketing.

The most common mistake with creatine on a cut is stopping it — because the scale ticked up when you started, or because you think "water weight" is hiding your abs. Both fears are misplaced. Creatine's water sits inside the muscle cell, not under the skin, and its real value in a deficit is holding onto strength and training output when everything else is working against them.

Why it earns its place specifically in a deficit

Creatine is fully covered mechanistically in the Foundation Stack; the cut-specific point is different. In a caloric deficit, ATP resynthesis and training performance are both under pressure — you have less fuel, so hard sets get harder and strength tends to slip. That strength slip is dangerous on a cut, because the mechanical tension of lifting near your usual weights is the signal that tells your body to keep the muscle. Creatine's phosphocreatine buffer helps you hold those loads and reps for longer, which indirectly protects lean mass during exactly the window it is most at risk.4

The "water weight is hiding my abs" myth

Creatine draws water into muscle cells (intracellular), which makes muscle look fuller, not softer — the opposite of the smooth "watery" look people fear, which comes from subcutaneous water and body fat. The one-time 1–2kg scale bump when you start creatine is intramuscular water and is fixed the moment you are saturated. If it messes with your head during a cut, saturate a week or two before you start the deficit so the shift is already baked into your starting number, then just hold 5g/day and never think about it again.

5g/day × 30 = 150g/month = half a 300g pack. Skip the loading phase on a cut — a 5g daily dose saturates in ~3–4 weeks without the extra water and GI upset of a 20g loading week, which you do not want while dieting.

Caffeine is the only "fat-loss" ingredient in this protocol with real evidence behind it — but not for the reason it is sold. It is not a meaningful fat-burner. Its value on a cut is training-fuel salvage: it restores some of the performance a deficit takes away, blunts appetite modestly, and adds a small thermic bump. It is also close to free, which is exactly why no one markets it hard.

What caffeine actually does in a deficit

The performance case is the strong one. The International Society of Sports Nutrition's position stand concludes caffeine reliably improves muscular endurance, strength, and perceived exertion across a broad dose range (~3–6mg/kg).5 On a cut, when you are under-fuelled and every session feels heavier, that is precisely the effect worth buying — it helps you hold training intensity, which helps you hold muscle. The appetite and thermogenic effects are real but smaller: caffeine produces a modest, transient rise in energy expenditure and can dull hunger for a few hours,6 which is a useful nudge, not a mechanism you should rely on.

Measured is the whole point — a cut is where caffeine creep bites

Dieters escalate caffeine because fatigue climbs as the cut goes on — a pre-workout scoop, then a second coffee, then a "fat burner" that is mostly more caffeine. That path wrecks the sleep you need to recover and preserve muscle in a deficit, and sleep loss itself drives muscle loss during weight loss (Nedeltcheva 2010). Keep a hard cutoff: nothing caffeinated after ~2 pm, and cap total intake around 3–6mg/kg. Black coffee is the cheapest reliable source; a 200mg tablet is useful only when you want a precise, measured dose. 4.Electrolytes — the actual crash prevention

This is the compound almost no cutting stack includes, and it is the one that resolves the symptom people most blame on "the diet not working": the flat, weak, dizzy, headachey feeling that shows up a week or two into a cut. That is rarely fat loss itself. It is usually electrolytes, and it is cheap to fix.

Why a deficit drains electrolytes

When you cut calories you usually cut carbohydrates too, and muscle glycogen falls. Every gram of glycogen is stored with roughly 3g of water, and as glycogen drops, that water — and the sodium and potassium dissolved in it — is flushed out. Lower insulin during a deficit compounds it, because insulin normally tells the kidneys to hold onto sodium; less insulin means more sodium excreted. The result is a genuine sodium–potassium shortfall that produces exactly the "crash" symptoms: light-headedness on standing, muscle cramps, flat pumps, sluggish training, and headaches. Replacing those electrolytes resolves most of it within a day, and it is the single highest-comfort-per-rupee intervention in this entire protocol.

Standard ORS is built for the opposite problem — watch the sugar

Reaching for an Electral/ORS sachet is a common instinct, but WHO-formula ORS is deliberately glucose-heavy — it is designed to drive water absorption during dehydration, not to be a low-calorie electrolyte source. A single sachet can carry 10–20g of sugar, which is calories you are trying to cut. For a diet, use a low-sugar or sugar-free electrolyte tablet, or mix your own: about ¼–½ tsp of regular salt plus a potassium salt (Lo-Salt / K-Salt) and a magnesium supplement in water across the day costs almost nothing and adds zero calories.

Magnesium does double duty here — it addresses the electrolyte shortfall and glycinate specifically supports sleep, which protects muscle during weight loss. If you cramp at night, this is usually the missing piece.

The three that don't survive the cut

Everything above is what to add. This is the harder discipline: what to stop buying. These three categories are the ones lifters reach for the moment they decide to cut — and each one is either counterproductive in a deficit or was never worth the money in the first place. We are naming them, and the exact reason each gets dropped.

Fat burners & thermogenic blends
Drop it — weak evidence

The whole category — "fat burners," "lean pills," L-carnitine "fat metabolisers," CLA, garcinia cambogia, high-dose green tea extract. The premise is that a pill oxidises fat. The human evidence does not support it. CLA produces a clinically trivial effect in humans — the meta-analysis found a rate of loss so small it is meaningless in practice.7 Garcinia / HCA shows no reliable weight-loss benefit over placebo and carries documented hepatotoxicity case reports.8 Oral L-carnitine does not acutely raise muscle carnitine or fat oxidation — you need weeks of co-ingestion with carbohydrate just to nudge muscle levels, and even then the fat-loss payoff is absent.9 High-dose green tea EGCG extracts have been flagged by EFSA for liver-injury risk at the doses these products use.10

Strip a branded fat burner down to its label and it is almost always caffeine plus a diuretic plus filler, sold at five to ten times the price of plain caffeine. The scale drop people feel in the first week is water from the diuretic, not fat.

Verdict: buy caffeine for ₹90 and put the other ₹1,400 toward whey. That swap does more for your cut than the fat burner ever would.

Drop it — wrong direction

Cluster dextrin, maltodextrin intra-workout carbs, and mass gainers all exist to add easy calories — the exact opposite of what a cut needs. A mass gainer is maltodextrin with some protein and a premium price; on a cut it is 1,000+ calories you are actively trying not to eat. Intra-workout carb powders make sense for endurance athletes and hard-gainers in a surplus, not for a lifter in a deficit doing 45–60 minute resistance sessions.

If you want some carbs around training for performance — a reasonable choice on a cut — get them from food, where the fibre and volume keep you fuller per calorie than a fast-digesting powder ever will. A banana or some rice does the job a dextrin scoop claims to, for less money and more satiety.

Verdict: no calorie-dense powders during a cut. Spend the carb budget on whole food you can actually feel in your stomach.

BCAAs
Drop it — redundant

BCAAs are marketed hardest for exactly this situation — "sip them during fasted cardio to spare muscle." The problem is they supply only 3 of the 9 essential amino acids, so on their own they cannot maximally stimulate muscle protein synthesis; the full set is required.11 And the "muscle-sparing" rationale assumes a low-protein background. On this protocol your daily protein is deliberately high — 2.2–2.6g/kg — which means the relevant amino acids are already circulating all day. Adding BCAAs on top is paying for a redundant fraction of what your whey already delivers whole.

If you genuinely train fasted and want insurance, a small whey serving or a complete EAA blend does the job better and cheaper per gram of useful amino acid. But for almost everyone hitting a high protein target, BCAAs are the easiest line item to delete.

Verdict: your whey is already better BCAAs — with the other six essential aminos attached. Skip the separate tub.

Timing & daily schedule

Only two compounds have real timing requirements — caffeine before training, and protein spread across the day to keep you full and hit the elevated target. Creatine and electrolytes are anchored to convenience and training, not a precise clock. On rest days, drop the pre-training caffeine (or keep a single morning coffee), spread the protein the same way, and hold creatine and electrolytes.

Where the money should go

Notice that whey is 60–70% of the entire budget — that is correct. On a cut, protein is the compound doing almost all of the muscle-protection work, so it deserves almost all of the spend. If money is tight, the order of cuts is: drop the convenience electrolyte for DIY, drop the caffeine tablets for coffee, and never touch the whey or creatine. The temptation to reallocate whey money toward a "fat burner" is the exact mistake this protocol exists to prevent.

When the scale stalls

Every cut plateaus. When it does, the fix is almost never a new supplement — it is an adjustment to the deficit or an honest look at adherence. Here is the order to work through before you spend another rupee.

First — check the obvious

Recount, don't re-buy

Weight loss stalls most often because intake crept up — bigger scoops, untracked oil, weekend meals — or activity dropped as the diet fatigued you. Before changing anything, log honestly for a week. A stall is usually a measurement problem, not a metabolism problem.

Second — adjust the deficit

Cut ~150 kcal or add a walk

As you lose weight, maintenance falls, so the old deficit becomes the new maintenance. Trim ~100–150 kcal or add daily steps rather than slashing food hard. Small, sustainable adjustments protect both muscle and adherence.

Third — take a diet break

A week at maintenance

Planned breaks at maintenance calories every 6–10 weeks can ease the hormonal and psychological drag of a long cut and improve adherence to the next block. This is a strategy, not a supplement — and it is free.

Only then — a considered add

Extra caffeine timing, not dose

If training genuinely suffers late in a cut, adjust when you use your existing caffeine (e.g. all of it pre-training) rather than adding more. There is no supplement that breaks a genuine plateau — only the deficit does.
