What micellar casein is
Casein is the main protein family in milk. In milk it exists as tiny clusters called micelles. Micellar casein powder is made by filtering milk so these micelles stay intact. Calcium caseinate is an older, more processed form made with acid and alkali; casein hydrolysate is pre-digested so it absorbs faster.
In the stomach, casein forms curds and empties slowly. A classic tracer study showed whey caused a sharp, short spike in blood amino acids, while casein gave a lower, longer plateau. Whey raised protein synthesis more (by 68% vs 31%), but casein cut protein breakdown by 34%, which whey didn't. [1]
After a workout, whey stimulated muscle protein synthesis more than casein in a matched comparison. [2] Casein's selling point is the overnight period, when you go many hours without food.
Clinical evidence — what the trials show
| Study | What was tested | Design | Key finding | Grade |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Boirie et al. (1997) — PNAS doi:10.1073/pnas.94.26.14930 | Labelled casein vs whey, single meal | Tracer study | Whey: fast, short amino-acid spike; synthesis up 68%. Casein: slow plateau; synthesis up 31% and breakdown down 34%. | B |
| Tang et al. (2009) — J Appl Physiol doi:10.1152/japplphysiol.00076.2009 | Whey hydrolysate, soy or micellar casein after resistance exercise | Acute lab study, n = 18 | Casein produced lower muscle protein synthesis than whey or soy, both at rest and after exercise. | B |
| Res et al. (2012) — Med Sci Sports Exerc doi:10.1249/MSS.0b013e31824cc363 | 40 g casein 30 min before sleep vs placebo, after evening training | RCT, n = 16 men | Casein was digested overnight, and muscle protein synthesis was about 22% higher. | B |
| Snijders et al. (2015) — J Nutr doi:10.3945/jn.114.208371 | Pre-sleep protein drink (27.5 g protein) vs placebo, 12 weeks of training | RCT, n = 44 men | Greater gains in muscle size and strength with the protein drink. The placebo group ate less protein overall, so this can't separate timing from total intake. | B |
| Morton et al. (2018) — Br J Sports Med doi:10.1136/bjsports-2017-097608 | Protein supplements of any type with resistance training | Meta-analysis, 49 trials, n = 1,863 | Protein supplements added strength and lean mass; gains levelled off at about 1.6 g/kg/day of total protein. | A |
What this means. Pre-sleep casein works, but largely because it adds protein. When studies give the control group the same total protein at another time of day, differences mostly disappear. The overnight window is a convenient slot, not a special one. [4][5]
How much to take
Evidence-based protocol
Before bed: 30–40 g of casein, the range used in overnight studies. [3][4] Per day: aim for about 1.6 g of protein per kg of body weight from all sources if you train. [5] Food alternative: paneer, curd (dahi) and milk are casein-rich. A bowl of dahi or a serving of paneer before bed does the same job as a shake.
India-specific context
You probably already eat it
India is the world's largest milk producer, and dairy is central to vegetarian diets here. That makes a dedicated casein powder less useful than in countries where people eat little dairy. Hung curd and paneer give 30–40 g of slow-digesting protein without the import premium. A powder mainly makes sense for convenience or for people with very high protein targets.
Indian brand comparison
| Product | Price | Dose | Score | Our take |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| MuscleTech Phase8 Protein | ₹4,299 / 2 kg | Whey-casein multi-phase blend | 6.5 (C) | The sustained-release idea is real, but the premium over whey plus separate casein is hard to justify. |
| Amway Nutrilite Protein Powder | ₹2,199 / 500 g | Soy-whey-casein blend | 5.4 (D) | Premium price through a multi-level-marketing channel. Poor protein per rupee. |
| Paneer / hung curd (food) | Varies | Casein-rich food | — | The cheapest slow protein. Same overnight effect, plus calcium. |
Scores and prices come from our product database (2026). We haven't yet scored a standalone micellar casein powder sold in India.
Safety
Milk allergy
Casein is a major milk allergen. People with a milk-protein allergy must avoid it entirely, unlike lactose intolerance.
Lactose intolerance
Micellar casein powders contain some lactose. Most lactose-intolerant people tolerate a single serving, but start small.
High protein intake
People with chronic kidney disease should agree a protein target with their doctor before using any protein supplement.
Fullness and bloating
Casein thickens in the stomach and can feel heavy late at night. That fullness may help people trying to control appetite.
Commonly taken together
Whey protein
ComplementaryWhey after training, casein before bed is a common pattern. Blends combine both. See our whey isolate deep-dive.
Creatine
High synergyCreatine adds strength and lean mass whatever protein you use. See our creatine deep-dive.
Magnesium
BedtimeOften taken at night too. See our magnesium glycinate deep-dive.
Soy or pea protein
AlternativeFor people avoiding dairy. See soy and pea protein.
Scoring rubric — full breakdown
1. Evidence quality
Solid mechanistic and training studies, but the key long-term trial didn't match total protein, so casein-specific benefits are unproven. [3][4]
2. Dosage confidence
Overnight studies consistently used 30–40 g, and daily protein targets are well defined. [5]
3. India market fit
Dairy is everywhere in Indian diets, so a casein powder adds little for most people. Standalone powders are mostly expensive imports.
4. Safety profile
Safe for anyone without a milk allergy. Minor lactose and fullness issues.
5. Label accuracy (tested)
Casein often appears in blends without disclosed proportions, so you can't tell how much you get. [6]
