What chondroitin is
Chondroitin sulphate is a long, chain-like molecule found in cartilage, where it helps hold water and gives the tissue its springiness. Supplements are extracted from animal cartilage, usually from cattle, pigs, chicken, or sharks and other fish. Molecules from different sources differ in size and structure, which is one reason products aren't interchangeable. [7]
The theory is the same as for glucosamine: give the body cartilage building blocks and joints do better. Chondroitin is a large molecule, though, and how much of a swallowed dose reaches the joint intact is uncertain.
Exercise first, supplements second
For knee osteoarthritis, strengthening exercise and weight management have the best evidence of anything, and every major guideline puts them first. Our knee maintenance protocol starts there. [5]
Clinical evidence — what the trials show
| Study | Form / dose | Design | n | Key finding | Grade |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Reichenbach et al. (2007) — Ann Intern Med doi:10.7326/0003-4819-146-8-200704170-00009 |
Chondroitin, various products | Meta-analysis, 20 trials | — | Trials varied enormously. The large, well-concealed trials showed minimal or no benefit for pain, and the authors concluded chondroitin should be discouraged in routine practice. | A |
| Singh et al. (2015) — Cochrane Review doi:10.1002/14651858.CD005614.pub2 |
Chondroitin alone or with glucosamine | Systematic review | Multiple RCTs | Small short-term improvement in pain vs placebo: 53 vs 47 in 100 reached a 20% improvement, an absolute difference of 6%. The trials were mostly of low quality. | B |
| Reginster et al. (2017), CONCEPT — Ann Rheum Dis doi:10.1136/annrheumdis-2016-210860 |
Pharmaceutical-grade chondroitin 800 mg/day vs celecoxib 200 mg vs placebo | 6-month double-blind RCT | 604 | Chondroitin reduced pain more than placebo (−42.6 vs −33.3 mm) and about as much as celecoxib (−39.5 mm). Side-effect rates didn't differ between groups. The trial tested one specific regulated product. | A |
| Clegg et al. (2006), GAIT — N Engl J Med doi:10.1056/NEJMoa052771 |
Chondroitin 1,200 mg, alone or with glucosamine | 24-week RCT | 1,583 | Neither chondroitin alone nor the combination reduced knee pain more than placebo overall. There was an exploratory signal for the combination in moderate-to-severe pain. See our glucosamine page. | A |
| Fransen et al. (2015), LEGS — Ann Rheum Dis doi:10.1136/annrheumdis-2013-203954 |
Chondroitin, glucosamine, both, or placebo | 2-year RCT | 605 | No group had less pain than placebo. The combination slightly slowed joint-space narrowing on X-ray. | A |
Guidelines split along the same line as for glucosamine. The American College of Rheumatology strongly recommends against chondroitin for knee and hip osteoarthritis. [5] ESCEO, a European osteoarthritis society, supports only pharmaceutical-grade chondroitin, arguing that it is a different product from supplement-grade material. [6]
Why pharmaceutical grade matters
Pharmaceutical chondroitin is made to a regulated standard with defined purity and properties. Supplement chondroitin isn't. When researchers compared the two, the supplement preparations varied widely in quality, and some contained far less chondroitin than their labels claimed. [7] Measuring chondroitin accurately is also technically difficult, so a product's own paperwork isn't always reliable. [8]
In practice: the positive CONCEPT result applies to a regulated pharmaceutical product. It doesn't automatically carry over to an unbranded powder in a joint-support capsule.
Dose, and how to trial it properly
A 3-month trial with a clear stop rule
Dose: 800–1,200 mg/day, the range used in CONCEPT and GAIT. [3][4] Before you start: rate your knee pain out of 10 on stairs and after a walk. At 3 months: rate it again, and stop if it hasn't clearly improved. Keep up strengthening exercise throughout. Check the per-day total on the label: many combination products need 2–3 tablets to reach it.
India-specific context
Mostly sold in combinations, always from animals
Because chondroitin is almost always sold alongside glucosamine in India, the practical decision is usually about the combination. Our glucosamine deep-dive covers that in full, including brand scores. [9]
What's on the Indian shelf
| Product | Price | Chondroitin | Score | Our take |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Carbamide Forte Glucosamine + Chondroitin | ₹549 / 90ct | 1,200 mg + glucosamine 1,500 mg | 7.7 (B) | Trial-level daily amounts and a NABL COA at the lowest price. Best value. |
| Puritan's Pride Triple Glucosamine | ₹1,499 / 90ct | 1,200 mg + glucosamine + MSM | 7.5 (B) | Honest, conservative formula. Import pricing. |
| Solgar Glucosamine Hyaluronic Acid Chondroitin MSM | ₹2,499 / 120ct | Four-compound formula | 8.3 (A) | Strong manufacturing standards; premium price. Full review → |
| TrueBasics Joint Support | ₹899 / 60ct | With glucosamine + Boswellia | 7.2 (B) | Boswellia's AKBA content isn't disclosed. |
| Steadfast Nutrition Joint Relief | ₹1,199 / 60ct | With glucosamine + Boswellia | 7.1 (B) | Better ingredient disclosure than most sports brands. |
Scores and prices come from our product database (2026). Scores rate product quality, not whether chondroitin works.
Safety
Side effects similar to placebo
In CONCEPT, rates of side effects and serious adverse events with chondroitin were no different from placebo. [3] Mild stomach upset is the usual complaint.
Warfarin
Raised INR and bleeding have been reported in people taking glucosamine-chondroitin products with warfarin. Check with your doctor if you take any blood thinner.
Scoring rubric — full breakdown
1. Evidence quality
One strong positive trial of a pharmaceutical product (CONCEPT), set against negative large independent trials and a meta-analysis showing that the benefit shrinks as trial quality rises. The Cochrane review's small benefit rests on mostly low-quality trials. [1][2][3]
2. Dosage confidence
The dose range (800–1,200 mg/day) is consistent across trials. Whether supplement-grade chondroitin at that dose matches the pharmaceutical product is uncertain. [7]
3. India market fit
It's always animal-derived in a largely vegetarian market, sold mainly as supplement grade, and its animal source isn't always stated.
4. Safety profile
Side effects were similar to placebo in the best trial. We deduct for the warfarin reports and inconsistent source labelling. [3]
Frequently asked questions
Does chondroitin work for knee pain?
The evidence is split. A 2007 meta-analysis found that the larger, better-designed trials showed little or no benefit. The Cochrane review found a small benefit in short-term trials that were mostly low quality: about 6 more people in 100 got a 20% pain improvement than on placebo. The CONCEPT trial found pharmaceutical-grade chondroitin 800 mg/day worked about as well as celecoxib, but that is a specific regulated product.
What dose of chondroitin should I take?
Trials used 800–1,200 mg per day. If you try it, give it about 3 months and stop if your pain hasn't clearly improved.
Is chondroitin vegetarian?
Almost never. Chondroitin is extracted from animal cartilage, usually from cattle, pigs, chicken, or sharks and other fish. Vegetarians should assume any chondroitin product is animal-derived unless it says otherwise.
Is chondroitin safe?
It is generally well tolerated. In the CONCEPT trial, side-effect rates were no different from placebo. People taking warfarin should check with their doctor, because raised INR has been reported with glucosamine-chondroitin products.
