5 Best Face Washes for Oily Skin That Actually Control Oil

Five face washes you can buy in India, chosen on what's in the bottle rather than what's on the front — with the honest answer to what a face wash can and can't do about oil.

Four of our five picks: Minimalist Salicylic + LHA 2%, CeraVe Foaming Cleanser, Neutrogena Oil-Free Acne Wash and Cetaphil Oily Skin Cleanser

Four of our five picks. Product images from the brands' listings.

The short answer

The best face wash for most oily skin in India is a fragrance-free 2% salicylic acid cleanser, and our top pick is Minimalist Salicylic + LHA 2% (about ₹299 for 100 ml). If your skin is sensitive or you use prescription acne treatment, choose CeraVe Foaming Cleanser instead. No face wash changes how much oil your skin makes: a good one removes shine and keeps pores clear for a few hours without irritating. Wash twice a day, not more, and follow with a light moisturiser and sunscreen.

Search for the best face wash for oily skin in India and the shelf answering you is crowded: charcoal, neem, clay, "oil control", "anti-pimple", "deep pore". Most of those words describe how a product feels or smells, not what it does.

We read every label the way we read a supplement label: for what's stated, what's implied and what's missing. For this guide we compared the ingredient lists of the face washes that come up most often in Indian searches, Amazon India bestseller lists, dermatologist recommendations and skincare community discussions, then checked them against the clinical evidence and Indian prices. We haven't lab-tested these products.

A day, plus after sweating: how often dermatologists advise washing oily skin. More isn't better. [1]

How we chose

Five checks, no sponsored slots.

1 · Evidence

An ingredient that does something

An active with clinical support for oily or acne-prone skin (salicylic acid), or a formula built to protect the skin barrier while cleansing.

2 · Gentleness

Cleans without stripping

Milder, sulphate-free surfactants score higher. Harsh washes irritate skin and don't reduce oil.

3 · Fragrance

Declared, not hidden

Fragrance-free ranks higher; fragranced picks are flagged, because fragrance is a common cause of skin reactions.

4 · Price & availability

Real Indian prices

The Picks

The 5 best face washes for oily skin.

Minimalist Salicylic Acid + LHA 2% Cleanser 100 ml bottle and box
01Best Overall

Minimalist Salicylic + LHA 2% Face Cleanser

Minimalist · 100 ml
~₹278–299 · about ₹2.8–3.0 per ml

The most complete oily-skin wash on the list for the price. It combines 2% salicylic acid with LHA (capryloyl salicylic acid, a related oil-soluble exfoliant) in a sulphate-free, fragrance-free base, and adds glycerin, panthenol, allantoin and oat extract to soften the drying effect. Zinc PCA is included for oil control, though its evidence is limited.

Key ingredients: salicylic acid, capryloyl salicylic acid, zinc PCA, glycerin, panthenol, oat extract. Watch for: dryness if used twice daily from day one. [5]

CeraVe Foaming Cleanser for Normal to Oily Skin pump bottle
02Best for Sensitive Oily Skin

CeraVe Foaming Cleanser for Normal to Oily Skin

CeraVe · 88 ml / 236 ml
~₹450–559 · 88 ml (about ₹5–6 per ml); 236 ml ~₹1,249

A fragrance-free foaming gel that cleans oily skin without leaving it tight, with three ceramides, niacinamide and hyaluronic acid to support the skin barrier. It has no exfoliating acid, which makes it the one to choose if salicylic acid irritates you, or if you're using a prescription retinoid or benzoyl peroxide and need a cleanser that won't add to the irritation.

Key ingredients: ceramides NP, AP and EOP, niacinamide, sodium hyaluronate. Watch for: the highest price per ml here; won't do much for blackheads on its own. [6]

03Best Budget Gel

The Derma Co 2% Salicylic Acid Gel Face Wash

The Derma Co · 100 ml
~₹263–299 · about ₹2.6–3.0 per ml

A clear gel wash with 2% salicylic acid printed on the tube, sulphate-free cleansers and no added fragrance, at one of the lowest prices per ml for a salicylic acid wash in India. Its witch hazel and willow bark are more marketing than medicine, and the formula's pH isn't disclosed. We reviewed it in full.

Key ingredients: salicylic acid, sodium lauroyl sarcosinate, glycerin, witch hazel. Watch for: dryness; pH not stated. [7]

Neutrogena Oil-Free Acne Wash 175 ml pump bottle with 2% salicylic acid
04Best for Very Oily Skin

Neutrogena Oil-Free Acne Wash

Neutrogena · 175 ml
~₹675–850 · about ₹3.9–4.9 per ml

A long-standing pharmacy classic with 2% salicylic acid and a rich, cleansing foam that suits very oily, resilient skin, especially in hot, humid weather. It uses a stronger surfactant than our top picks and contains fragrance, so it's less suitable for sensitive or easily irritated skin.

Key ingredients: salicylic acid, sodium C14-16 olefin sulfonate, cocamidopropyl betaine. Watch for: fragrance; can feel stripping on drier days. [8]

Cetaphil Oily Skin Cleanser bottle for combination to oily, sensitive skin
05Best Acid-Free Option

Cetaphil Oily Skin Cleanser

Cetaphil · 118 ml / 125 ml
~₹629–699 · about ₹5.0–5.6 per ml

A light foaming cleanser for combination to oily skin that doesn't rely on an acid, with niacinamide and panthenol and mild surfactants. It's a good daily option if exfoliating acids don't suit you. The Indian version lists perfume and five fragrance allergens, so skip it if your skin reacts to fragrance.

Key ingredients: niacinamide, panthenol, glycerin, cocamidopropyl betaine. Watch for: fragrance (parfum, linalool, geraniol and others). [9]

Didn't make the list: Himalaya Purifying Neem (popular and cheap, but fragranced, and neem has little clinical evidence for oily skin), and charcoal or clay "detox" washes (little evidence they do more than any cleanser). For a dry or sensitive day, see our Cetaphil Gentle Face Wash review.

The Evidence

What a face wash can actually do about oil.

It removes oil; it doesn't turn it off. Oil (sebum) is made continuously by glands in the skin, and how much you make depends mostly on genetics, hormones, age and climate. A cleanser clears what's on the surface, so skin looks less shiny for a few hours. No face wash permanently reduces sebum production.

Salicylic acid is the most useful active for oily, congested skin. It's oil-soluble, so it helps loosen the plugs behind blackheads and whiteheads. The American Academy of Dermatology's 2024 acne guideline recommends it conditionally, based on low-certainty evidence. [2] A small trial found a 2% salicylic acid cleanser reduced comedones. [3] Because a wash is rinsed off within a minute, expect gradual, modest results.

Niacinamide has some evidence for sebum, mostly in leave-on products. In trials, a 2% niacinamide product left on the skin lowered sebum levels. [4] In a face wash the contact time is short, so treat niacinamide in a cleanser as a bonus, not the main event.

Harsh is worse, not better. Scrubbing, very foamy detergents and washing too often irritate the skin barrier. Dermatologists advise a gentle cleanser twice a day and after sweating, oil-free products, and blotting papers for midday shine. [1]

How To Use It

How to wash oily skin the right way.

When

Twice a day, and after sweat

Morning and night, plus after workouts or a hot commute. Washing more often doesn't reduce oil and can irritate. [1]

How

Lukewarm water, 30–60 seconds

Massage gently with fingertips, rinse well and pat dry. Skip scrubs and rough cloths.

Salicylic acid

Start once a day

Use a salicylic acid wash in the evening for the first 1–2 weeks, then go twice daily if your skin isn't dry or stinging.

After

Moisturise, then sunscreen

Follow with a light, oil-free moisturiser, and daily sunscreen in the morning: see our Skin Care edit on reading SPF and PA.

Which one for you?

Match the wash to your skin.

Choose salicylic acid if

You get blackheads, whiteheads or breakouts

  • Your T-zone is shiny and pores look clogged: Minimalist or, on a budget, The Derma Co.
  • Your skin is very oily and resilient, and fragrance doesn't bother you: Neutrogena.
Choose gentle if

Your oily skin is also sensitive or treated

  • You use tretinoin, adapalene or benzoyl peroxide, or your skin stings easily: CeraVe.
  • Acids don't suit you but you want a light foam: Cetaphil Oily (fragranced).

See a dermatologist if you have painful, cystic or scarring acne, or breakouts that don't improve after 8–12 weeks. Prescription treatments work far better than any face wash.

Frequently asked

Frequently asked questions about face wash for oily skin

Which face wash is best for oily skin in India?
For most oily, acne-prone skin, a fragrance-free 2% salicylic acid cleanser such as Minimalist Salicylic + LHA 2% (about ₹299 for 100 ml) is the best starting point. If your skin is sensitive or you use prescription acne treatment, a gentle ceramide cleanser such as CeraVe Foaming Cleanser is a better fit.
Can a face wash stop oily skin?
No. A face wash removes the oil that's on your skin for a few hours, but it doesn't change how much oil your glands produce. It controls shine and helps keep pores clear; lasting oil control depends on your skin type, hormones, climate and the rest of your routine.
How many times a day should I wash oily skin?
Twice a day, morning and night, plus after heavy sweating, is what the American Academy of Dermatology recommends. Washing more often, or scrubbing, can irritate skin without reducing oil.
Is salicylic acid face wash good for oily skin?
Yes, especially if you get blackheads, whiteheads or breakouts. Salicylic acid is oil-soluble and helps unclog pores. The evidence is rated low certainty and a wash is on the skin only briefly, so expect gradual help with clogged pores rather than a cure for acne.
Should oily skin use a foaming or gel face wash?
Either works. What matters more is that the cleanser is gentle, fragrance-free if your skin is sensitive, and leaves skin clean but not tight. A squeaky, tight feeling means the wash is too harsh.
Do oily skin types need moisturiser after face wash?
Yes. A light, oil-free, non-comedogenic moisturiser helps keep the skin barrier comfortable, especially if you use salicylic acid or acne treatments. In the morning, follow with sunscreen.
Is Himalaya Neem face wash good for oily skin?
It's popular and inexpensive, but it contains fragrance and relies on neem, which has little clinical evidence for oily or acne-prone skin. We didn't include it in our five picks for that reason.
