Trick one: one molecule, many names

Chemistry gives most ingredients several perfectly valid names — a common name, a systematic name, a botanical (Latin) name, and often a trademarked branded form. All can be true at once. Brands pick whichever name serves the moment: the science-y one to sound rigorous, the botanical to sound natural, the trademark to sound proprietary.

None of that is dishonest by itself. The problem is when the choice of name is doing persuasion work — making a cheap, common ingredient read as an exotic breakthrough, or making one thing look like three.

The habit to build: when a name looks impressive, translate it to its plain synonym before you feel impressed. Half the "advanced" formulas deflate on contact with a dictionary.

Trick two: the salt weighs more than the mineral

This is the big one, and almost nobody is taught it. Minerals — magnesium, calcium, iron, zinc — are chemically unstable on their own, so they're delivered bonded to a carrier as a salt: magnesium oxide, calcium citrate, ferrous sulfate. The weight on the label is usually the weight of the whole salt. The amount of actual mineral — the "elemental" content — is a fraction of that, and it depends entirely on which salt was used.

So "Calcium Citrate 1000 mg" does not mean 1000 mg of calcium. Watch what the same 1000 mg of salt actually delivers depending on the form:

Same 1000 mg on the label, wildly different calcium. Carbonate is ~40% elemental calcium, citrate ~21%, gluconate ~9%. This is only the weight story — how well each is absorbed is a separate question (that's Path 03). But if the label quotes the salt weight and you read it as the mineral, you can overestimate the dose four-fold.

The same physics applies across the mineral shelf. Keep this rough table in your head — you'll use it constantly:

The one-line rule

A good label states the elemental amount explicitly — "Magnesium (as bisglycinate) 200 mg". A vaguer one gives you only "Magnesium Bisglycinate 200 mg" and lets you assume. When only the salt weight is shown, mentally multiply by the fraction above to get the real dose.

Trick three: the same active, counted twice

The last trick uses trick one against you. Because a molecule has several names, a brand can list it several times — as if the formula were bigger and busier than it is. Two flavours of this:

  • Padding the ingredient count. "Green tea extract, Green coffee extract, Guarana" reads like three fat-burners. It's caffeine, caffeine, and caffeine — with a modest amount of each so no single line looks alarming, but a real combined stimulant load.
  • Splitting a form to dodge a ceiling. A multivitamin might list "Vitamin B12 (as methylcobalamin)" and "(as cyanocobalamin)" separately. Individually modest, together they're the real dose — and you only see it if you add them up yourself.
Worked example A "natural energy" blend that's caffeine three times
NATURAL ENERGY MATRIX — per serving Green Coffee Bean Extract ......... 200 mg Guarana (Paullinia cupana) ........ 150 mg Green Tea Extract (std. 50% EGCG) .. 100 mg Panax Ginseng ......................... 50 mg

What the layout implies: a botanical, plant-powered pick-me-up. What it actually is: three caffeine sources stacked. Green coffee at ~45–50% chlorogenic acid still carries caffeine; guarana is ~10–22% caffeine by weight — higher than coffee beans; green tea extract adds more.

Rough combined caffeine: guarana alone (150 mg × ~12%) ≈ 18 mg, green coffee and green tea add a similar amount each — call it 40–60 mg total, before you count the cup of chai you had with it. Not dangerous, but not "gentle and natural" either — and the label is arranged so you'd never add it up.

All three tricks share one root cause: the ingredient list is the one place a brand can be technically truthful and still misleading, because names are flexible and you're not expected to do arithmetic. Do a little arithmetic. It's the cheapest edge on the whole shelf.

What to remember

Translate the name, weigh the salt, add up the duplicates.

  • Names are flexible. Guarana is caffeine; ascorbic acid is vitamin C. Translate an impressive name to its plain synonym before you're impressed.
  • Salt weight ≠ mineral weight. "Calcium citrate 1000 mg" is ~210 mg calcium. Look for the elemental figure; if it's missing, multiply the salt weight by its fraction.
  • Watch for the same active twice. Three "botanical" energy sources can be three servings of caffeine; two B12 forms can be one real dose split in two. Add them up.

Audit the ingredient list of a multivitamin or mineral supplement.

  1. Find a mineral (calcium, magnesium, iron, zinc). Does the label give the elemental amount, or only the salt weight?
  2. If only the salt weight, estimate the real dose using the fraction table above.
  3. Scan for repeats — two forms of the same vitamin, or several plants that are all really the same active. Add them together.
